Looking for a thrilling escape filled with outdoor adventure, stunning scenery, and local charm? North Lake Tahoe is calling your name! Whether you’re into hiking, kayaking, climbing, or just enjoying nature’s beauty, this guide will lead you on a 5-day journey packed with excitement.
Lake Tahoe is one of nature’s great masterpieces, cradled high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Formed about two million years ago, it is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second deepest in the U.S.
Spanning two states, California and Nevada, North Lake Tahoe offers something for everyone. It’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with over two dozen beaches, twelve ski resorts, and hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails.
While there are activities here for every season, we visited North Lake Tahoe in October with their local tourism board. We LOVED the fall colours, smaller crowds, and various activities available. That said, this itinerary can be used in spring, summer, or fall with little to no adjustments.
Day 1: Arrive in North Lake Tahoe
Depending on where you are coming from, the easiest way to get here is to fly into Reno, Sacramento, or San Francisco and rent a car. The drive is filled with stunning views from any direction, setting the tone for your trip. Once you arrive in North Lake Tahoe, check into The Incline Lodge in Incline Village.
Check-in at The Incline Lodge
There are many accommodation options around the lake, but we recommend Incline Village’s only luxury boutique hotel! The Incline Lodge has been recently remodelled, and its new atmosphere blends cozy mountain charm with modern comfort.
The lodge is in a prime location, just a short distance from the lake, delightful restaurants and endless trails. The Incline Lodge has an indoor pool and a fantastic lounge area, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. Plus, they offer complimentary wine, tea, and coffee at different times throughout the day.
The staff were incredibly friendly and full of great recommendations. They went above and beyond to ensure we got the most of our stay and made us feel right at home.
Here are our top accommodation picks in North Lake Tahoe:
Dinner at Sage Leaf
After settling in, head over to Sage Leaf for dinner. This intimate, rustic-chic spot is perfect for kicking off your North Lake Tahoe experience. With a menu inspired by seasonal ingredients and local flavours, Sage Leaf offers delectable appetizers, creative burgers, and hearty meat dishes.
The ambiance is welcoming, with a warm lodge aesthetic and a heated patio allowing you to gaze at the starry Tahoe night sky. We ordered the Spring Conchiglie Pasta and Port Wine-Braised Beef Short Ribs, which were both heavenly.
Day 2: Explore Lake Tahoe’s Fall Foliage & Turquoise Blue Water
Breakfast at Drink Coffee Do Stuff
Start your day early at Drink Coffee Do Stuff in Incline Village. This specialty coffee company was built with the belief that extraordinary coffee leads to an extraordinary life. Known for its locally roasted coffee and adventurous vibe, it will surely pump you up for the day ahead. We ordered the Avocado, Feta and Sprouts Breakfast Sandwich, smoothies, and lattes, which were all fantastic!
Fall Foliage Hike with Tahoe Adventure Company
The first activity we recommend is a guided fall foliage hike with Tahoe Adventure Company. This three-hour hike is perfect for taking in the changing colours of the aspen trees, which burst into brilliant shades of yellow and orange.
With our knowledgeable guide, we hiked to Martis Fire Lookout and Martis Peak, which offer jaw-dropping views of Lake Tahoe below. Along the way, our guide shared fascinating stories about the area’s natural and human history.
This hike included snacks, water, and all applicable permit fees. If you prefer a different hike in the area, just ask! They can be super flexible depending on each group’s ability and preferences as long as they know in advance.
Visit Sand Harbor State Park and Rent a Clear-Bottom Kayak
After your hike, take the scenic drive to Sand Harbor State Park. This beach is one of the most picturesque in North Lake Tahoe, with its crystal-clear water and smooth boulders lining the shore. Entry costs $15 (cash or check only), but it’s worth every penny.
If you want a laid-back afternoon, you could spend it on the beach. We rented a kayak from Clearly Tahoe, conveniently located inside the park. It costs about $85 USD for two hours in a double clear-bottomed kayak.
We highly recommend paddling to Bonsai Rock, one of the most photographed spots in the region. The water is so clear here that you can see the bottom as you paddle through massive granite boulders. There are a few small beaches along the shore where you can dock your kayak and enjoy the sun.
Dinner at Jason’s Beachside Grille
After an adventure-filled day, head to Jason’s Beachside Grille for dinner. Located right on the water in Kings Beach, Jason’s offers stunning lake views, especially at sunset. The warm, welcoming atmosphere and casual setting make Jason’s a great place to wind down and reflect on your day.
Their hearty and family-friendly menu features everything from gourmet burgers to fresh seafood. We ordered the Baby Back Ribs and Bleus Burger, both to die for!
Day 3: Climb, Eat, and Explore Local Towns
Breakfast at Sugar Pine Cakery & Cafe
Day 3 begins with a visit to Sugar Pine Cakery and Cafe in Tahoe City. This cozy, local favourite is known for its fresh pastries, hearty breakfast options, and laid-back vibe. The ham and cheese croissant is a must-try if you’re craving something savoury. Try the veggie frittata for a lighter option with dairy and gluten-free substitutes.
Morning at Tahoe Via Ferrata
Next, it’s time to test your climbing skills at Tahoe Via Ferrata. Located on the ski hill at Palisade’s Tahoe, they offer 2, 3 and 4-hour guided tours. The course combines thrilling climbs and rope bridges while being secured to the rock, making it accessible for all skill levels.
Think of Tahoe Via Ferrata as an assisted climbing activity. It transforms once complex and impassable terrain into a fun and accessible course. We’ve equipped the rock with ladder rungs, steel steps, and suspension bridges to allow climbers to move through challenging terrain. Each route also has a steel cable anchored into the rock which runs up the entire route from start to finish. Each participant is issued a harness with a specialized lanyard that attaches to the cable. This system achieves two goals. First of all, it ensures that participants are connected to the rock 100% of the time. Secondly, it makes climbing a big cliff accessible to people with no prior climbing experience.
-Tahoe Via Ferrata
The views of Olympic Valley and the surrounding mountains from the top are spectacular. We booked a 4-hour private tour, which we highly recommend if you are a fast hiker with previous Via Ferrata experience. Because we were moving quickly, our guide brought us through about 70% of both 4-hour routes and allowed us to climb back down instead of taking a vehicle.
Lunch at Fireside Pizza Company
After conquering the cliffs, head to Fireside Pizza Company in Palisades Tahoe. Famous for its stone-baked pizzas, this casual eatery is the perfect place to grab a bite. Their signature pesto chicken pizza is a must-try, and their garlic fries are legendary. Fireside Pizza offers outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal while soaking in the sunshine and mountain views.
Explore Tahoe City, Incline Village, and Kings Beach
Spend the afternoon leisurely exploring the towns of Tahoe City, Incline Village, and Kings Beach, each with its own unique charm. Tahoe City offers cool waterfront shops, local art galleries, and many spots to enjoy the lake. Incline Village is more laid-back, with scenic views and small boutique shops. Kings Beach is known for its beachy vibe, where you can stroll along the shore and browse local stores.
Dinner at Koi Sushi
Cap off your evening with dinner at Koi Sushi in Incline Village. This Japanese restaurant is known for its fresh sushi and creative rolls. The casual atmosphere is stylish, making it a great relaxing spot after a day of climbing and exploring.
If you’re a fan of all-you-can-eat sushi, this is your place! You can choose whatever you would like from the all-you-can-eat menu for $44 USD per person or order as usual from the a la carte menu. We ordered Gyoza, Tempura, Vegetable Udon, Dynamite Rolls and Yam Yam Rolls. Everything was scrumptious, and the staff were incredibly friendly.
Day 4: Treetop Adventures and Hidden Beach Hike
Breakfast at The Dam Café
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at The Dam Café in Tahoe City. Known for its delicious breakfast burritos and homemade pastries, this café is a local favourite.
Their breakfast sandwiches are loaded with eggs, bacon, and fresh veggies, and their coffee is rich and satisfying. They also have excellent options for dietary restrictions, which we loved! We ordered a delicious breakfast sandwich, smoothies, and lattes.
Morning at Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park
For this morning’s outdoor escapade, tackle the Tahoe Treetop Adventure Course at Granlibakken Tahoe. This aerial obstacle course features 97 tree platforms, 27 zip lines, and 60 bridges suspended in the treetops.
It’s an exhilarating experience that will have you zipping between ancient pines and swinging across ropes. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or new to treetop courses, this activity is fun for all ages (6+) and a great way to test your balance, agility, and bravery.
The cost is $73 USD per adult ($63 USD for children), including a safety briefing, all of your equipment, and 2.5 hours to explore as many of the courses as possible! This is a self-guided experience, and there are plenty of trails and sitting areas for non-participating family members and friends.
Lunch at Front Street Station Pizza
After your treetop adventure, reward yourself with a slice of pizza from Front Street Station Pizza along the Truckee River. This spot is loved by locals and visitors alike for its crispy, wood-fired pizzas.
With a cozy, old-school vibe, Front Street Station is the perfect place to refuel. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and Chicken Tacos. Everything was divine! Their outdoor seating area is delightful, with views of the Truckee River.
Hidden Beach Hike and Sunset at Bonsai Rock
In the afternoon, take a scenic hike to Hidden Beach, a secluded spot known for its clear water and smooth boulders. It’s a short 0.4-mile (0.65 km) walk from the parking area, and the trail offers stunning views of Lake Tahoe. Once you arrive, you can lie on the beach or jump in for a swim! Make sure to grab complimentary beach towels before leaving The Incline Lodge!
If you’re feeling adventurous, extend your walk along the East Shore Trail. This stunning three-mile paved path winds along the lake’s edge, offering breathtaking views of the sparkling water and surrounding mountains. Whether on foot or bike, the smooth, wide path offers a comfortable, scenic journey with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy. Plus, there are over 25 informative panels along the way!
Finally, make your way to Bonsai Rock for sunset. The easiest way to get here is to hop in your car and drive to this parking area. Ensure you watch the parking signs along the highway and only park in designated areas. Following the trail to the right along the road will eventually wind you down to this lookout over Bonsai Rock.
Dinner at Thai Recipe
After witnessing the stunning sunset at Bonsai Rock, head to Thai Recipe for a flavorful dinner. Located in Incline Village, Thai Recipe offers an array of delicious, authentic Thai dishes that hit all the right spots after a long day of adventure.
The menu features favourites like spicy Pad Thai, rich and creamy green curry, and hearty stir-fries packed with fresh vegetables and herbs. Their ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible, ensuring every dish bursts with flavour.
Day 5: Saying Goodbye to North Lake Tahoe
Breakfast at Tunnel Creek Cafe
On your final day in North Lake Tahoe, fuel up for one last adventure with breakfast at Tunnel Creek Cafe. Nestled next to the trailhead for the iconic Flume Trail, this café is a gateway for hikers and mountain bikers. Their menu is perfect for adventurers on the go. It features fresh pastries, breakfast burritos, and hearty sandwiches that will give you all the energy you need for the day ahead.
If you have extra time in the area, you could hike Monkey Rock Trail (4.2km & 152m elevation gain) or rent a bike to explore Flume Trail. Once you’re finished, drive to the airport of your choice and fly home.
